How do you make a drink coaster out of sand?
I want to help my daughters make a drink coaster for their dad for a Christmas present (for him to use at work). I thought it would be fun to make one or more of those “thirsty stone” coasters but I can’t seem to find any directions on the internet. I thought it might be a simple matter of using the molding/caulking compound that is used for making mosaic tiles but mixing some sand with it, but I don’t want to blunder in because this is supposed to be a thrifty option as well as a personalized one. Can someone direct me to a website, kit or give me an idea of how to do this project (and the materials needed)?
My kids and I mixed sand and regular white glue, filled a muffin pan (which was shaped like gingerbread men) baked it in a low oven 175 degrees. Leaving them out to dry overnight would probably work too. They made cute ornaments. However, they will be rough. A coaster would likely need some felt on the bottom to keep it from scratching surfaces.
