All Natural Mosaic?
I am making an all natural mosaic of starry night for my color theory class. I am going to make natural dyes with beats, blueberries, etc. and then dye small pebbles and rocks with them. Anyone got any good all natural ideas? Any other options I havn’t thought of or some good methods for doing this?
Blackberries, for an interesting purple
cranberries for reds
goldenrod for yellows
willow bark for reds/red blacks
carrots for oranges/yellow oranges
sassafras leaves for oranges
tea bags for browns, also coffee grounds
red cabbage for a purplish color/ sort fo red purple
spinach leaves for green
saffron (but its expensive) for brilliant golden yellow
marigold flower heads for yellows
thats all I can think of…..
To make the dye solution: Chop plant material into small pieces and place in a pot. Double the amount of water to plant material. Bring to a boil, then simmer for about an hour. Strain. For a stronger shade, allow to simmer until the liquid begins to disappear. You can even mix the colors, in a seperate container…but be careful to mix enough at one time to do all you need with it. You’ll never get the same color twice without exact measures.
You can just crush berries through a straier to get pure color from them, and carrots, likewise, you can shred and then press through a strainer…to get a really dark brownish color, let the coffee grounds soak overnight in water that you boiled, next day, strain out the grounds and reboil , then simmer until its reduced by half.
Its gonna be very hard to dye pebbles, as they don’t have the most porous of surfaces. Can I suggest something else? Egg shells? You could go ahead and crack them up, then make a crushed kind of mosaic with them. They’d take the color a whole lot better.
