Mosaic Art Projects

What has been your least favorite art project?

And why, explaine.

Last year in art 1 my least favorite art project was our mosaic project. It just took so much time and I even had a small project compared to some people in my class. I ended up rushing towards the end just so I could get it done.

This year in art 2 my least favorite project is our pixle project. Basically we took a 4×6 picture and broke it into 25×16 little boxes. Then on a bigger sheet of paper we had a grid of 25×16 1/2 inch boxes. Then each box is suppose to be colored a different shade of brown. Tessx – We did a project just like that. It only took us a few weeks though. It wasn’t my favorite project but it was alright !!

I usually enjoy most of the work I do, although, there are some projects I like a lot more than others.

My issues are more with clients that make jobs less enjoyable, such as those that demand a lot more service than what they pay for, or those that know nothing about the work I do, but feel that they can direct a better result than I can create. And, there are those that one cannot satisfy, no matter what comes out.

One job, in particular comes to mind. I used to do custom airbrushed tee shirts and craft fairs and holiday boutiques. A lady came up to me and asked if I could do an image of her two poodles on a shirt. She even had a photograph of the two dogs that I could use as a reference. I told her I could, but that I would have to do it at my studio at home to assure I do a good job. She was fine with that, so I collected my deposit and gave her an estimated finish date of a week.

I took the photograph home and worked up a series of sketches and got to work on her tee shirt. I did what I thought was a good job in a couple of days and delivered her shirt that evening. She took one look at it and declared that I got one dog just right, but the other dog looked nothing like her second poodle. I guarantee customer satisfaction, so I told her I would be happy to redo the shirt if she could give me some hints on what was wrong the the image. I took some notes and went back to redo the shirt.

I made a few changes and delivered the shirt a couple of days later. Again, the first dog was perfect, but she was not satisfied with the other. I promised her another redo. (but by this time, there was no profit in doing a third shirt, what with time spent, cost of the shirts and traveling expenses. But, it was a matter of professional pride) I sprayed a third shirt and took it to her. She was still not satisfied, but could not give me any specific ideas as to what is was I was missing on that dang second dog.

I gave her back her deposit and went away, hoping she’d never contact me for another job.

Other than that one, the least enjoyable jobs are the ones that the customer fails to pay for. That’s why I now work by contract and work order, and collect deposits on ALL jobs.
