Types of Mosaic Tiles available in market

A group of mosaic tiles that are used to create artistic patterns are known as tessera. The small pieces are arranged to create a mosaic design. These cubical tiles can be installed in a direct or indirect manner. The direct method involves direct installation of pattern on the tile surface, while indirect method involves invert placement of tiles on a mesh screen or base, which is removed while pasting the tiles on the tile surface.

However, the color and texture of mosaic tiles determines the final look of your masterpiece. You can choose among the given below tiles.

1   Vitreous glass tesserae: These tiles are prepared by firing molten glass in a tray. They have a uniform shape and size. They are available in various colors and can come in size of 2 square cm to 3 square cm.

2   Ceramic mosaic tiles: These tiles come in glazed and unglazed forms. These tiles can add all the more beauty to your mosaic tile project. They usually come in 1” or ¾” squares that can be stuck on a paper or mesh screen.

3   Smalti: These mosaic tiles are found in Venice and their price range varies with the color and weight of the tile. It is easy to stick on cement and has light reflecting properties due to its uneven texture. These irregular tiles come in 3/4” size.

4   Mirror tessarae: These tiles are used to add depth into a mosaic pattern. However, it’s advisable to apply glue on its back to protect the silver color.

5   Stained glass: These tiles are available in translucent and opaque form. It comes in the form of big sheet; hence you can cut them according to your perception with help of a glass cutter.

6   China and porcelain: These mosaic tiles , have better finish than ceramic tessarae. They fulfill the need of designers who are looking for spell-bounding colors, textures and patterns.

So, add beauty to your mosaic project by utilizing the above tessarae for the installations.
