Why do American Conservatives dislike hyphenated terms like African-American, Native-American, Asian-American?
Latin-American, Italian-American, Irish-American, German-American, Redneck-American, Hillbilly-American, etc?
Since I have come to your country to as the head of my companies new IT firm Los Angeles, California; everything has been about politics and hear many Conservatives here say minority groups should only call themselves Americans for unities sake! but many of these same Conservatives do not mind calling these minority groups what I was taught were derogatory terms (EXAMPLE: Nigger instead of African-Americans), why is this?
Furthermore wouldn’t asking these groups to call themselves only Americans at all times be considered by many to be an effort by fearful, or prejudiced Anglos to supplant the vast tapestry of life — the cultural mosaic of your country — with blind nationalism?
It is not because of the meaning of these terms themselves as it is about how they came into existence. They are the result of a “politically-correct” culture, wherein everyone is hyper-sensitive to being offended or offensive.
Conservatives dislike this because it is a silly reason to be offended, and people waste too much time being offended or feigning offense.
Also, these terms actually have racism tied up in them because they exclude white people. The ratio of times you hear the term “European American” to the times you hear these others is astronomical. You just don’t hear that term. Those are just “white people.” And you know why? Because white people aren’t allowed to be offended by anything. They must–each and every one of them–spend eternity apologizing for slavery, even though none of the ones around today ever owned a slave, and most of their ancestors didn’t either.
