Differance Between Ceramic and Porcelain Tiles?
im going to be making a type of mosaic collage with a load of old tiles, is there any way to visually tell the differance between ceramic and porcelain tiles?
Porcelain tiles are actually ceramic tiles, but with a very low absorbency. They are usually made from kaolin clays, feldspar, silica and colouring oxides fired at around 1200 deg C. This makes the tiles extremely hard wearing and more difficult to work than regular ceramic tiles (tend to shatter due to being highly brittle when cut). Plain versions of both look pretty similar – the best way is to look at the back if it is red clay it is not porcelain – although some are made from white clays so this is not infallible.
